2018 Mellon Winter Pedagogy Workshop

About the workshop

On February 8-10, 2018, the Univeristy of Chicago Language Center will host its second Mellon Winter Pedagogy Workshop. Led by Ahmet Dursun, Language Assessment Specialist, and Nicholas Swinehart, Multimedia Pedagogy Specialist, this workshop will cover setting realistic outcomes for end-of-first year language learning as well as creating four-skill assessments for those outcomes.

Agenda

Thursday, February 8: Welcome and Overview

5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Understand concepts, terms and principals of language assessment. We will use this language throughout the workshops. Gain the fundamentals of language assessment to apply to test design.

Friday, February 9: Competency

8:30 am – 4:00 pm

Understand principles of designing an end-of-first-year assessment in the four skills integrated with reverse design. Use the Proficiency Guidelines to identify levels appropriate to your language. Begin the process of item design, selecting and working with authentic materials and input.

Saturday, February 10: Practical Proficiency

8:30 am – 4:00 pm

Understand principles of designing an assessment for “practical proficiency” – the ability to function in most personal settings and some academic or professional settings. Use the Proficiency Guidelines to identify levels appropriate to your language. Begin the process of item design, selecting and working with authentic materials and input.
