2017 Mellon Summer Pedagogy Workshop

A dynamic workshop showcasing reverse design and innovative pedagogy across languages and skills.  You will leave this workshop with a wealth of outcome-based course designs and assessments, as well as the means to create and sources to discover materials in writing systems, grammar and vocabulary, and reading and listening comprehension.

This workshop is identical to the Mellon Winter Pedagogy Workshop, offered in February, 2017.

Who can attend this workshop?

Members of our consortial schools, specifically:

  • Instructors of LCTLs interested in the Collaborative Partners project
  • Instructors of LCTLs interested in a dynamic professional development experience
  • Instructors of CTLs
  • Chicago Public School and Chicago City Colleges language instructors (earn up to 13 CPDUs!)

Participation in the workshop is free.  Registration is limited to 60.

If you are traveling from outside the Chicago area, we offer travel stipends up to $300.


Thursday, August 10th

  • 8:30        Breakfast
  • 9:30-12:00   Reverse Design in Practice
  • 12:30     Lunch
  • 1:00-5:20   Attend round-robin sessions on writing systems, grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening.  Each demonstrates the use of pre-face-to-face activities, integrated with in-class activities, followed up with meaningful post-face-to-face assignments and activities.
  • 5:00        Dinner

Friday, August 11th

  • 8:30        Breakfast
  • 9:30-12:15            More round-robin!
  • 12:15     Lunch
  • 1:00-2:30 Foregrounding Speaking and Interaction in the Intensive Language Classroom
  • 2:30-4:00 Sources for Materials across Languages and Formats
  • 4:00        Evaluations, grab a snack and go!
